Disaster Recovery Solutions

Data loss is more common than you may think, and it is not always a result of a natural disaster! In fact, more likely than a natural disaster are threats such as human error, hardware malfunctions, and power failures just to name a few. Whether you need to meet specific compliance requirements, avoid loss of revenue and/or reputation, or all of the above, here is the bottom line: Having a detailed IT Disaster Recovery plan in place is absolutely crucial.

We realize that every business is different and no solution is one size fits all. NetSource works with you directly to help you understand what your RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and RPO (Recovery Point Objective) requirements are. Then, we design a custom Disaster Recovery plan around those specific requirements as well as your budget, ensuring the safety of your important data and applications.

RPO (Data Integrity)
RTO (Fail Over)
Cost
Daily Hourly Every 15 Min. Real Time
< 1 week Level 1 Off-site Backups
< 1 day Level 2 Basic Disaster Recovery Site Level 3 Basic Disaster Recovery Site
< 1 hour   Level 4 Disaster Recovery Site w/ Replication Level 5 Disaster Recovery Site w/ Replication
< 1 min       Level 6 Disaster Recovery Site w/ Load Balancing & Clusters

RPO (Recovery Point Objective): This is determined by looking at the time between data backups and the amount of data that could be lost in between backups. What is your company's loss tolerance in relation to your data? How long can you afford to operate without the data before your business suffers?

RTO (Recovery Time Objective): This refers to the time it takes to get your IT and business activities back up and running after a disaster. How long can you afford to be down?

Level 1: Off-site Backups

(High Risk Tolerance)

Off-site data backup services based out of our Naperville, IL datacenter

  • Data can be backed up both locally and to an off-site location across a fast fiber connection
  • Incremental backup schedules can be customized to meet specific (RPO) requirements
  • Clients can access data via a portal to restore important data files in real-time as required
  • NetSource becomes your backup partner and helps with bare-metal restores and backup verification
  • Cost: $

Level 2: Basic Disaster Recovery Site

(Medium – High Risk Tolerance)

Data is backed up to secure storage servers and would be restored to a redundant hardware setup

  • Data is backed up to a secondary location where cold spare hardware is ready for use
  • Incremental backup schedules can be customized to meet specific Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
  • If failure of primary environment occurs, backup data is restored to waiting redundant hardware
  • A plan will be created to test environment and ensure we have accurate RTO and RPO estimates
  • Cost: $$

Level 3: Basic Disaster Recovery Site

(Medium – High Risk Tolerance)

Data is backed up to secure storage servers and would be restored to a redundant hardware setup

  • Data is backed up to a secondary location where cold spare hardware is ready for use
  • Incremental backup schedules can be customized to meet specific Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
  • If failure of primary environment occurs, backup data is restored to waiting redundant hardware
  • A plan will be created to test environment and ensure we have accurate RTO and RPO estimates
  • 1-8 hour incremental backups
  • Cost: $$$

Level 4: Disaster Recovery Site w/ Replication

(Low – Medium Risk Tolerance)

Data is replicated to redundant hardware instead of only being backed up to a storage server.

  • Data is replicated to redundant standby hardware located at an off-site datacenter location
  • If failure of primary environment occurs, data is already on redundant infrastructure - DNS change required
  • Log shipping, replication – like Rsync or Microsoft content sync
  • Cost: $$$$

Level 5: Disaster Recovery Site w/ Replication

(Low – Medium Risk Tolerance)

Data is replicated to redundant hardware instead of only being backed up to a storage server.

  • Data is replicated to redundant standby hardware located at an off-site datacenter location
  • If failure of primary environment occurs, data is already on redundant infrastructure - DNS change required
  • Increased replication frequency from Level 4
  • Products such as Veeam, Unitrends, Double Take used in virtual environments
  • Cost: $$$$$

Level 6: Disaster Recovery Site w/ Load Balancing & Clusters

(Low Risk Tolerance)

A combination of load balancing and clustering to off-site hardware to provide real-time recovery of the hosted environment. This package will provide the lowest RTO and RPO objectives because no manual intervention is required to bring up the DR location after the primary environment goes down (Real-time Recovery).

  • The goal of this plan is to setup a real-time failover of the environment with no downtime
  • Uses a combination of load balancing and clustering to off-site redundant hardware
  • No manual intervention is required to bring up DR site so package provides lowest RTO and RPO
  • Cost: $$$$$$

Basic Disaster Recovery (DR) Site with Replication: Level 4 & 5

Note: This diagram shows the DR site using virtual servers, but the DR site could also be physical servers. Also, the primary site is shown as physical servers but they could also be virtual servers.

Note: There are products like Veeam, Unitrends, and Double Take that automate the replication process as an alternative technique for replication. Some products work best in the cloud and others handle dedicated server environments.  They make recovery easy.

Basic Disaster Recovery (DR) Site with Load Balancing: Level 6

basic-disaster-recovery-site-with-load-balancing-level-6

Note: This diagram shows the DR site using virtual servers, but the DR site could also be physical servers. Also, the primary site is shown as physical servers but they could also be virtual servers.

Note: There are products like Veeam, Unitrends, and Double Take that automate the replication process as an alternative technique for replication. Some products work best in the cloud and others handle dedicated server environments.  They make recovery easy.

Note: DNS is delegated to the geo-load balancers so that fail-over is automatic. The load balancers detect a failure and then send out the correct DNS resolutions for the traffic to go to the right place. This can take place in a matter of seconds since the TTL is only 1 second for the DNS.
